PUSH TO REVOKE CHARITY STATUS

ALRTA has written to the Australian Charities and Not-for-Profits Commission requesting a review of the charitable status of Aussie Farms Inc.

Aussie Farms Inc publishes information detailing the location of more than 3,000 livestock farms and processors where it alleges animal abuse is commercialised.  Individuals are encouraged to capture images or videos at these sites to upload onto its online sharing platform.

While ALRTA acknowledges that the Charities Act 2013 lists ‘preventing or relieving the suffering of animals’ as a charitable purpose, the Act also disqualifies purposes such as ‘engaging in or promoting activities that are unlawful or against public policy’.

There are clear laws in Australia that regulate the treatment of animals for commercial or private purposes. Farmers and processors identified by Aussie Farms Inc are not abusing animals.

The information and instructions provided by Aussie Farms Inc incites individuals to engage in illegal acts such as break and enter, trespass and harassment against persons conducting legal farming and processing activities.

ALRTA asserts that the true purpose of Aussie Farms Inc is to facilitate these illegal activities.

This situation is akin to a charitable organisation with the purpose of ‘advancing social welfare’ publishing the names and addresses of high wealth people and then encouraging individuals to capture and upload images of the inside of their homes to ‘illustrate social inequity’.  Australians would not stand for the resulting levels of trespass and harassment in that case, and nor should we be expected to tolerate it in the livestock farming and processing sector.

NATIONAL ROAD SAFETY WEEK

ALRTA is proud to support National Road Safety Week 2019.

Every year, more than 1200 people are killed and 35,000 seriously injured on Australian roads.

National Road Safety Week honours those we have lost and pledges to make the roads safer for everyone.  Jump online and take the pledge. Please Pledge to Drive So Others Survive and display a yellow ribbon to show your support for road safety.

ANIMAL WELFARE GOVERNANCE

On 8 February 2019, the Agriculture Ministers’ Forum agreed to develop options to improve the national governance framework for regulating farm animal welfare in Australia.

This week, ALRTA Executive Director, Mat Munro, and TruckSafe National Manager, Justin Fleming, met with representatives from the Federal Department of Agriculture and Water Resources to discuss the operation of the current framework, processes for developing Australian Animal Welfare Standards and Guidelines and alternatives to the current approach.

ALRTA also provided the Department with examples of industry-based animal welfare initiatives such as TruckSafe Animal Welfare Module, LivestockASSIST, Ramp Guidelines and drafting of our effluent code of practice.

ALRTA ANIMAL WELFARE COMMITTEE

The ALRTA Animal Welfare Committee (AWC) met this week to discuss live exports by air, a review of the PigPass NVD, effluent infrastructure, ramp standards and Q fever.

The AWC also endorsed nominations for the ALRTA Effluent Code of Practice Steering Committee which will include representation from transporters, producers, saleyards, agents, processors, enforcement, biosecurity and animal welfare. ALRTA will convene the first formal meeting of the steering committee later this month.
