‘Newcomer’ not so new

Cavanaghs Stockmaster owner Rob Cavanagh has been around long enough to know what works and what doesn’t.

Rob Cavanagh declares he’s a “relative newcomer” in the livestock transport business, despite the fact he’s been involved in it for close to 40 years.

“When you look at the Martins, the Frasers, the Curleys, they’re respected names who’ve been around for a long time,” he says.

Cavanagh, in his own right, is a well-known and respected figure in livestock transport and he’s not afraid to voice his opinion on industry issues.

Originally from Casino in far north NSW, he grew up on a mixed beef and dairy farm, a background that gave him the experience in dealing with saleyards and abattoirs.

ALRTA Executive Director Update

Welcome to another weekly ED update!

Last week was a busy one with the team attending Trucking Australia 24 here in Canberra.

I participated in ATA Council meeting where industry issues such as skills and competency of drivers, level crossing safety, HVNL reform and other key priorities were discussed. Over the coming weeks and months ALRTA will be working with other ATA members to progress these critical issues to ensure the ongoing sustainability and viability of the trucking industry.

I participated in Centre for Connected and Automated Transport – National Future Transport Summit stakeholder meeting. CCAT is a membership organisation, open to all those organisations with a stake in Australia and New Zealand’s transport future, with an interest in next gen transport, particularly areas where automation could provide significant productivity uplifts. They are planning a Future Transport Summit in 12 to 18 months time and are preparing a policy forum in the lead up to this summit and they’re keen to hear from regional and rural transport voices.

There was another NLIS uplift industry reference group meeting this week. The project seems to be progressing with a wide variety of views and prospectives being incorporated, currently user journeys are being developed with industry feedback being sought.

The end of the week was consumed with all things Trucking Australia. It was a great conference and a big shout out to the team at the ATA for pulling off such a great event. Also, thank you to Elanor for stepping in to help with the registration desk, I know it was greatly appreciated by the ATA team. The key themes were safety, productivity, technology and workforce and diversity.

ALRTA’s Daimler Future Leader candidate, Ann Ferry, knocked it out the park and I received great feedback about her participation and performance.

I was fortunate to be involved in three sessions over the course of the conference which were well received and triggered many conversations with potential partners.

A note of staffing this week, Sue Davies is on leave until Monday 29 April 2024 and Elanor will be on leave Wednesday 24 April to Friday 26 April 2024. If you need anything from the team, please call the office or email office@alrta.org.au.
