ALRTA Executive Director Update

Welcome to another ED update

The team have been busy finalising the LRTAQ ALRTA National Conference, it is set to be a great event.  We have approximately 200 delegates each day plus the Bull Carters Ball has sold out with 300 confirmed attendees!  A mammoth effort by Tammie, Colleen and Elanor to organise this event.

ALRTA was pleased to support TTA and LTAT to nominate Michelle Harwood for National Women in Transport Award.  Michelle is an energetic person who enjoys working collaboratively to develop innovative solutions to transport industry problems. She has initiated and delivered programs to address heavy vehicle driver shortage issues, including a Women Behind the Wheel project, and is also very focused on improving safety and freight efficiency.

Michelle’s contributions to the Transport industry cannot be understated and we wish her well with her nomination.

ALRTA participated in the SAFEMEAT Advisory Group meeting advocating for transporters and their role in the red meat supply chain. Jennifer Rotoli, NHVR conducted a presentation on the Effluent Code of Practice and the primary producer and processor roles in managing effluent in the supply chain. As a result, there has been further engagement around the need for roadside effluent facilities to assist in mitigating risk. ALRTA will provide input into working groups on NLIS for Sheeps and Goats, Crisis and Incident Management and NVD for future assurance systems.

As part of the SAFEMEAT meeting, the new chair was introduced, Dr Peter Barnard. I had the pleasure of sitting next to Peter at the meeting and he recollected he had worked with ALRTA and its members in the late 80s and early 90s. I will take the opportunity to thank outgoing Chair Andrew Henderson. Andrew was Chair of the Advisory Group for over 6 years and was a strong advocate for the transporter’s role in the red meat supply chain. His contribution to this Advisory Group cannot be understated. ALRTA will continue to work with Andrew in various capacities including the NLIS Uplift project and other agriculture initiatives.

It’s set to be another big week in Canberra, a short week after the Canberra Day public holiday. I look forward to catching up with members at the conference next week.

Until then…

Skills for a decarbonised future – a survey

As a part of the 2024 Daimler Truck Future Leaders’ Forum, our industry future leaders are conducting group projects about what the future of the transport industry in Australia looks like.  This year’s theme is the Decarbonisation of the transport industry.

ALRTA nominee, Ann Ferry, from GDP Transport, along with Patrick Stevenson (Daimler Truck) and Justin Khan (Qube Logistics) have been tasked with assessing the essential skills required for individuals pursuing careers in the trucking industry within a decarbonised road freight future.

Once completed, the groups will present their reports and recommendations to a minister/ministerial adviser at Parliament House and to the delegates at Trucking Australia 2024.  These recommendations will be used to guide future policy and decisions.

To assist them with their research, they have developed a survey to gain greater insight into industry members’ understanding and opinions of decarbonisation and the skills they feel are most relevant.

Please assist our industry future leaders by completing the survey here.

Thank you.

National level crossing safety notice

In a joint effort to enhance road safety, the Australian Trucking Association (ATA) and National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) have issued a crucial safety Notice to help truck drivers to remain vigilant at level crossings.

The National Level Crossing Safety Notice reminds heavy vehicle drivers of the potentially life-saving safety measures they must adhere to around rail lines.

ATA CEO Mathew Munro said the safety notice was a part of a shared commitment to reducing fatalities and injuries at the more than 20,000 level crossings intersecting with roads and pathways across the country.

“Between 1 July 2014 and 31 December 2022, there were 39 lives lost and 49 serious injuries at Australia’s rail crossings,” Mr Munro said. “These aren’t just numbers; these are people who didn’t make it home safely to their loved ones.
