ALRTA Executive Director Update
Welcome to another weekly update.
Well it’s starting to get cool here in Canberra and the Autumn leaves are setting in. If you’re travelling here for Trucking Australia next week, remember to bring your jacket!
Last week the team and I met with some ICT providers to upgrade our current arrangement and improve cyber security.
As a result of ALRTA involvement in SAFEMEAT Advisory Group, Janet Vallier from QLD Department of Agriculture reached out regarding setting up a stakeholder group to identify and progress a roadside effluent disposal site in QLD. Watch this space for further updates.
Elanor and I met with one of the preferred providers for a new CRM and website to answer some questions in order to pull together a final recommendation paper for the Executive and Council to consider. I am looking forward to having an easy to use database and central repository of knowledge to assist in ALRTA’s policy and advocacy work, engagement with members and partners and history of interactions.
I participated in the NVD working group as part of the SAFEMEAT Advisory Group. This group is looking at the current and future requirements for NVDs within the red meat supply chain.
The stakeholder group supporting the transition of TruckCare from TruckSafe met to discuss and agree upon next steps. We will meet again at Trucking Australia next week. This is an exciting project for ALRTA and the secretariat will continue to update industry as this project progresses. Thank you to the ATA, TruckSafe Board, NTI and industry groups in supporting this transition, ALRTA is excited about developing and deploying an industry led animal and driver welfare solution.

Late last year, I was invited by the National Women in Transport Speaker Bureau, I finally got around to doing my interview and finalising my bio. It can be found here. The Bureau is a federally funded government initiative aimed at highlighting women in transport and attracting more women and diverse candidates into the industry.
Lastly, thank you to Elanor and Sue for taking me out for a lovely belated birthday lunch at Beluccis in Manuka. We had a fun couple of hours reflecting on the conference and planning the next few months of activities.

Have Your Say – Renewing the Australian Animal Welfare Strategy
All Australian Governments are working together to renew the Australian Animal Welfare Strategy (AAWS) with the objective of providing a framework for a national approach to animal welfare in Australia.
Written submissions on the renewal of the AAWS are now being invited, through the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry’s Have Your Say platform.

NHVR announces NSW heavy vehicle check weigh pilot
In a new trial starting this month, the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) will pilot opening two Heavy Vehicle Safety Stations (HVSS) in New South Wales (NSW) for industry use, to check their vehicle mass outside of operating hours.
NHVR Chief Operations Officer Paul Salvati said the pilot is being launched in response to industry feedback and will ultimately assist road safety and bolster self-compliance within the heavy vehicle industry.
“Effective from the beginning of April, two weighbridges will be open outside of operational hours on key transportation routes in NSW, allowing drivers to check the weight of their vehicle and ensure their movements are safe and efficient,” Mr Salvati said.
“The first location is the Halfway Creek HVSS, on the Pacific Highway 32 kilometres south of Grafton, and the second location is the Daroobalgie HVSS near Parkes and will operate at both north and southbound sites.
NHVR Roadside Information Hubs
NHVR is holding several roadside information hubs in the next two weeks, in NSW, VIC, SA and QLD, covering a wide variety of topics including fatigue, accreditation, access, Chain of Responsibility (CoR) and load restraint.
