MND RESEARCH GIVEN MAJOR BOOST THANKS TO RECORD TRUCK FUNDRAISER
Australian research into Motor Neurone Disease has been given a major boost with almost $600,000 raised through the raffle of a restored 1950s Chevrolet truck, lovingly named ‘Daphne’.
Over the last four months tickets were in high demand for the lava-orange Chevvy, with the raffle drawn at the NTI Supercars round in Townsville. Amongst over thirty thousand names, Queenslander Peter Rodney, was the lucky winner.
The restoration project will see an incredible $580,000 go towards MND research, bringing the total raised by Australia’s largest specialist insurer, NTI, to more than $2 million over the last six years.
NTI CEO Tony Clark said Daphne was the sixth truck to be restored and raffled by the organisation, with 100 percent of funds raised given to support MND research in Australia.

The Rural Transport Rising Star award is an initiative to celebrate and reward the young people building the rural transport industry of the future.

EFFLUENT CODE ON THE AGENDA AT ALMA’S SALEYARDS EXPO
The ALRTA project to raise awareness of the Effluent Code continued this week with a presentation about the Code to members of the Australian Livestock Markets Association (ALMA) at their AusSaleyards Expo 2023 in Surfers Paradise.
ALRTA Project & Communications Officer, Sue Davies and NHVR’s Graeme Cooper delivered the presentation on the second day of ALMA’s well attended event. During the conference there was a strong focus on animal welfare and the importance of taking every opportunity to tell a positive story about the commitment of the livestock industry to maximising the health and contentedness of animals in its care.
In addition to hearing detailed information about the development and content of the Effluent Code, supply chain partners were encouraged to share information and work together with other parties to help manage the risk of effluent spillage during road transport. The audience asked questions about what parts of the Code are particularly relevant for saleyards and were pointed to the section on managing livestock destinations for advice about risk management controls that they could implement. They were also keen to clarify how the Chain of Responsibility laws can be practically and sensibly complied with in specific situations.
UPDATE ON THE PHASE OUT OF LIVE SHEEP EXPORTS BY SEA
The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry has largely completed consultation on the phase out of live sheep exports by sea, with over 2000 attendees involved at in-person forums, over 330 at virtual forums and over 80 meetings held with organisations and farmer groups.
Over 800 written submissions and 3,300 survey responses were received by the Department, including a submission from LRTAWA supported by ALRTA.
The Department is considering the feedback and has sought expert advice and analysis on key industry issues raised and how and when the phase out could be implemented, including what might be needed to help supply chain participants and communities to transition.

ATA REFINES PLAN TO FIX UNFAIR TRUCKING CONTRACTS
Following a minister meeting last week, the Australian Trucking Association (ATA) has today released its detailed plan for trucking industry contract standards.
ATA Chair David Smith said the plan would deliver fair contracts for the trucking industry, while still encouraging businesses to innovate and offer business efficiencies to their customers.
Under the ATA plan, nine out of ten trucking businesses would be able to resolve contract disputes through the Fair Work Commission rather than the courts to fix unfair contracts.
The plan was refined following a meeting between ATA Director David Simon, CEO Mat Munro and Employment and Workplace Relations Minister Tony Burke.
“The meeting was a valuable opportunity to discuss the positions adopted by ATA members last week,” ATA Director David Simon says.

REVERSING AIDS TO BE REQUIRED FOR NEW TRUCKS
Reversing aids such as cameras or sensors will need to be fitted to all new model trucks from 1 November 2025 and all new trucks from 1 November 2027, the Australian Government announced this week.
The requirement will also apply to cars and light commercial vehicles, but not to prime movers or trailers. Partially completed vehicles such as cab-chassis trucks will be exempt until they are finished.
The impact analysis for the new requirement estimates that it will save 13 lives and avoid 140 severe injuries and 62 minor injuries over 45 years.

FUEL TAX CREDITS TO RISE
Fuel tax credit rates will increase from 1 August 2023 in line with fuel tax indexation.
The fuel tax credit rate for eligible heavy vehicles travelling on public roads will increase to 20.0 cents per litre.
The rate for other business uses, including to power auxiliary equipment on heavy vehicles, will increase to 48.8 cents per litre.
TRIALS UNDERWAY FOR AUS-FIRST SAFETY TECH
Heavy vehicles working on the first stage of the Mickleham Road Upgrade in Victoria will be the first in Australia to benefit from the new MAX-SAFE technology.
The new technology has been installed in heavy vehicles being used on the road project. The trials of the audible and flashing light alert system aim to help reduce the likelihood of injuries and deaths associated with heavy vehicle movements.
Automatic detection systems have been installed inside these heavy vehicles to alert the operator within the cabin that a vulnerable road user, such as a pedestrian, cyclist or scooter rider is in the vicinity – in particular during left-hand turning manoeuvres.
Powered by an artificial intelligence based smart camera, this Side View technology as part of the MAX-SAFE system is specialised in detecting specific vulnerable road users, and not other objects or obstructions.
