Pre-Transport Stock Preparation – Costing Everyone!

In 2007 a joint ALRTA and Meat and Livestock Australia survey of over 200 professional livestock transport companies revealed poor stock preparation for transport as the number one animal welfare issue facing Australian livestock transport. A follow-up ALRTA industry survey and report on this matter has now been released.

The ALRTA estimates that the costs and water use of washing out dirty livestock crates runs to $50 million and 6 billion litres of water a year!

Even some simple steps towards better pre transport stock preparation of your livestock will help to reduce these hidden costs to our shared industry. Better stock preparation will also result in cleaner rural roads free of effluent spill, cleaner animals arriving for processing and export and healthier, less stressed animals during the transport journey.
