The Tribunal will undertake research

The ALRTA Submission argued for any new regulator to be allocated appropriate resources and capabilities to undertake its own research.

The Government has agreed to entrench this expectation in the Bill. The Bill provide that it is a function and power of the Tribunal to undertake its own research into ‘issues of interest’ and the Bill compels the Tribunal to publish its research.

These are important commitments. The Tribunal won’t have to blindly accept everything that is put in front of it and that means it won’t easily be ‘captured’ by the small number of organisations in our industry that are well equipped with staff and lawyers who can write a lot of submissions.
