NATIONAL CONFERENCE – JUST 2 WEEKS AWAY
Things are progressing well in preparation for the ALRTA/LRTAWA joint National / State Conference to be held in Bunbury WA 3-4 July 2015. We are planning a special night on Friday, 3 July, to celebrate our 30th Anniversary and we invite all members past and present to join us!

The big ticket auction item at ALRTA National Conference is a 15L, 525 Hp Cummins ISX EGR Engine. It’s a proven base engine design with leading engine breaking performance. It has dual overhead camshafts and uses the Cummins HPI fuel system known for its proven reliability.
Beaurepaires have also donated a full B Double set of high mileage tyres and BP have provided a 16GB mini ipad.

LRTASA CONFERENCE A GREAT SUCCESS
The 30th Annual Livestock & Rural Transporters Association Conference was very well attended at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre on 12-13 June, 2015.
SA Minister for Transport and Infrastructure, the Hon. Stephen Mulligan MP, opened proceedings with an address that struck the right chords with many in the audience. He is very clearly committed to improving safety outcomes on the road while at the same time making sensible improvements to access restrictions that will improve productivity.
We heard about the progression of the SA ’90 day plan’; on-road issues encountered by police; NHVR activities; and ALRTA initiatives such as our National Ramps Guide and LivestockASSIST. Even with all this going on, the now legendary crumbed lamb cutlets are still worth a mention in my humble opinion (seriously, I look forward to these every year now!).
The LRTASA AGM was also held on 13 June. The ALRTA congratulates all elected office bearers including:

ANZ NOW SUPPORTING YOUR NATIONAL ASSOCIATION
The ALRTA is pleased to announce the establishment of a new agreement with ANZ that will help support your national association.

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT RELEASES NORTHERN AUSTRALIA WHITE PAPER
This week the Federal Government released the long awaited Northern Australia White Paper which outlines strategies and funding commitments for developing industries, particularly agriculture, across northern Australia.
In addition to the already announced $100m for beef roads, the White Paper announces a further $600m commitment over five years to priority road projects including Arnhem Highway; Barkley Highway; Flinders Highway; Great Northern Highway; Hann Highway; the Outback Way and Tanami Road.
The paper also notes that the government is actively exploring options for heavy vehicle charging reform, including industry’s willingness to pay for upgrades or alternative service outcomes. The approach is expected to be trialled in the next 12 months. The ALRTA is keeping a close eye on developments in this area.
NHVR RESPONDS TO ERROR IN GOATS NOTICE
The ALRTA was most impressed with the speed at which the NHVR was able to correct an error in the recently released Victoria Class 3 Heavy Vehicle Livestock Carrier (Goats) Mass Exemption (Notice) 2015 (No. 2)
The original notice restricted operators to 3 decks when most crates are built to carry 4. Our Victorian operators noticed this problem and raised it with NHVR. To their credit, NHVR were able to fix this issue almost immediately. Given the long standing reputation of large national bureaucracies to move slower than a wet week, we have been very pleasantly surprised at the lightning speed at which NHVR was able to retract and re-issue the notice. It’s great to see and we hope they can keep it up.
ATA COUNCIL MEETS
Liz Schmidt (LRTAQ) and Mathew Munro (ALRTA ED) attended the ATA Council meeting in Canberra on 10 June 2015. Issues discussed included: management of the ATA building; outcomes of the recent Ministerial Council Meeting; CTP Insurance for interstate trailers; review of the Load Restraint Guide.
