LABOR TO BAN LIVE SHEEP EXPORTS
Federal Labor has confirmed that an elected Albanese Government would ban live sheep exports.
The trade is currently subject to strict conditions and reporting, including a prohibition on exports to the Middle East during the Northern Hemisphere summer.
The Coalition and industry have opposed Labor’s announcement citing that the current measures have been highly successful in reducing mortality, enabling the $92m trade to continue to support global food security and over 3,000 jobs domestically.
Federal Labor has not stated how or when the trade would be phased out, but has previously suggested a five year period with support for domestic value-adding.
Federal Labor has also committed $4.5m over four years to fund the establishment of an independent Inspector-General of Animal Welfare.

FMD CONFIRMED IN INDONESIA
Australia’s Chief Veterinary Officer has confirmed an outbreak of 1,247 cases of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) in East Java, Indonesia. A regional emergency response is now being prepared including testing to produce an appropriate vaccine.
A small FMD outbreak in Australia, controlled in 3 months, could cost around $AUD 7.1 billion, while a large 12 month outbreak would cost $AUD 16 billion.
ALRTA encourages members to exercise vigilance in inspecting livestock and reporting any suspicious symptoms to authorities.
If you suspect an exotic disease in livestock call the Emergency Animal Disease Watch Hotline on 1800 675 888 (free call within Australia).

INVITATION TO ADD TO TOOLBOX TALKS
To support the heavy vehicle transport industry to have regular and engaging safety conversations on key topics, the National Road Safety Partnership Program (NRSPP) is developing a series of Heavy Vehicle Toolbox Talks (TBTs).
The digital packs are designed to be flexible and adaptable to how your organisation conducts TBTs. You can print them out, hold presentations guided by the facilitation pack and utilise driver videos to really engage your workers.
The TBTs are being developed through collaboration with a number of leading industry partners who have helped select, prioritise, peer review and contribute to each topic. More than 20 TBTs will be created, exploring topics ranging from fatigue and loading to roll overs and third-party road users.
NRSPP would welcome the chance to interview a few ALRTA members to feed into the TBT content or videos and help make them more translatable, as drivers talking to drivers. If you (or one of your drivers) have an interest in participating, please contact the ALRTA Secretariat by emailing email@example.com or telephone 02 6247 5434 in office hours.
The first TBT, launched on Thursday, 5 May 2022, explores driver distraction. A new topic will be released on the first Thursday of each month. The TBTs will be posted on the NRSPP website and promoted through Facebook or Instagram social pages.
THE NEXT STEP FOR CUMMINS
Originally published in PowerTorque
The X15 has become the go-to engine for many truck buyers in Australia and PowerTorque takes a look at the the next step for Cummins, the Euro 6 X15, coming into the supply chain last year and ramping up this year.
There are going to be plenty of diesel engines powering heavy long distance trucks for some time to come, and one of the most important engines in the future for the Australian truck market is going to be the next generation X15 from Cummins.
Over the past twenty years the Cummins brand has come to dominate the Australian truck market and the engine which has led the way for the brand is the 15 litre, which is almost the default engine chosen for heavy duty trucks in this country, where there is a choice for the truck buyer.
The reputation of these Cummins engines has come through some tough times, but it has been the organisation itself which has carried the brand through to the place the big red engine has in the hearts and minds of the trucking people of Australia.
