REVIEW OF LIVESTOCK LOADING SCHEMES

The NHVR has released a discussion paper as part of a review of Livestock, Mass, Dimension and Loading Arrangements. The discussion paper aims to identify opportunities for:

  • standardising and rationalising access arrangements, to minimise the compliance burden on livestock transportation in Australia, as far as reasonably practicable
  • simplifying cross-border transport and improving last-mile access on local government roads
  • improving safety, productivity and efficiency for the livestock transportation industry.

ALRTA held a member forum this week to discuss key proposals. ALRTA Council considered the forum outcomes later in the week.  ALRTA will lodge a submission on agreed issues on behalf of industry.

Please contact your State Member Association for more information and input to the process.

Submissions are due by 5pm Tuesday 26 July 2022.

TAX TIPS FOR TRUCK DRIVERS

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has a range of tips and information to help you lodge your tax return correctly this year.

Take the easy road by checking out the ATO’s tax time guide for truck drivers to help make lodging your return easier.

Don’t forget that COVID-19 tests you purchased for work purposes are now tax deductible. You can claim a deduction for a COVID-19 tests you paid for from 1 July 2021 as long as you:

  • used the test for a work-related purpose.
  • had a qualifying COVID-19 test, such as a PCR test or a rapid antigen test.
  • have a record of your purchase.
  • paid for the test yourself and were not reimbursed for the cost by your employer.

Finally, if you’re lodging online, the best time to lodge is from late July. By then, all your information from employers, banks and health funds will be automatically included in your tax return. All you need to do is double check the information is correct and add anything that’s missing.
