EXOTIC DISEASE PLANNING & PREPARATION
This week Athol Carter (ALRTA Executive Member) and Mat Munro (ALRTA Executive Director) welcomed the opportunity to connect and collaborate with industry stakeholders as part of a taskforce updating the national response strategies for Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) and Foot & Mouth Disease (FMD). ALRTA is involved in the writing groups currently revising the AUSVETPLAN manuals for these EADs to ensure they are up to date and fit for purpose.
Concerningly, fragments of FMD and African Swine Fever were recently detected within Australia on imported meat products. These are not live viruses and Australia remains free of these diseases.
Given the critical importance of our industry being prepared for exotic disease incursions, we have resolved to hold a special information and Q&A session at the upcoming combined ALRTA-LRTAV National Conference. Come along and hear about the plans to tackle FMD and LSD directly from the people in charge of the response, as well as the consequential impacts for livestock transport.

FMD & LSD – KNOW THE SIGNS
Can you recognise the signs and behaviours in livestock that could indicate an animal may have an Emergency Animal Disease like Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) or Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD)?
The Glovebox Guide: Biosecurity, Emergency Animal Diseases (EAD) and Preparing Livestock for Transport is an excellent resource, developed by LBRCA and MINTRAC to give livestock transporters the knowledge and confidence to recognise the signs and behaviours in livestock that could indicate an animal may have an EAD. LIVESTOCK LOADING REVIEW – SUBMISSION DEADLINE EXTENDED
NHVR has extended the deadline for submissions in response to the discussion paper relating to the review of Livestock, Mass, Dimension and Loading Arrangements.
The new deadline is: 5pm (AEST), Tuesday, 20 September 2022.
The discussion paper aims to identify opportunities for:
- standardising and rationalising access arrangements, to minimise the compliance burden on livestock transportation in Australia, as far as reasonably practicable
- simplifying cross-border transport and improving last-mile access on local government roads
- improving safety, productivity and efficiency for the livestock transportation industry.
ALRTA thanks NHVR for extending the deadline while industry deals with several other pressing issues including preparation for threatening exotic disease incursions.

Monash University Accident Research Centre and the NRSPP invite you to join heavy vehicle rollover prevention expert Alan Pincott for a free webinar, on Tuesday 23 August 2022.
Truck rollovers were once viewed as inevitable, an accepted part of the transport business. While the transport industry has made progress in stopping rollovers, some still hold that view. In this webinar, Alan Pincott will show that whether we’re moving timber, milk, grain or cement, understanding the causes and putting some simple measures in place can reduce the risk of rollovers, or prevent them entirely.
The webinar will help operators and drivers understand that most rollovers are caused by high centre of gravity loads on challenging roads, where our drivers typically operate at the outer limits of heavy vehicle laws, and the role each can play in controlling many of the contributing factors.

SAFETY WEEK MESSAGE TO FARMERS
This National Farm Safety Week, NHVR teamed up with ALRTA to share some top tips for farmers to ensure the safety of truckies! The safety messages gave advice about the important role that primary producers play in supporting safe, reliable road transport for all road users and focused on driver fatigue, “Make sure you’re ready when the driver arrives so they can manage their fatigue”, livestock preparation, “Prepare your stock for loading and manage effluent so stock can travel well and complete the journey in good condition”, and loading ramps, “Check your ramp standards and ensure that both people and livestock are safe”.
