CONGRATULATIONS AMY THROCKMORTON – INAUGURAL RURAL TRANSPORT RISING STAR AWARD WINNER
At the joint LRTAWA/ALRTA Combined Conference in Busselton WA, Amy Throckmorton was announced as the winner of the inaugural Rural Transport Rising Star Award.
Amy was nominated by LRTAV member TGR Transport. As the winner, Amy was presented with the trophy, certificate, $5,000 cash prize and a GME GPS Personal Location Beacon.
Travel expenses to the conference for both award finalists was courtesy of ALRTA National Partner bp, a proud supporter of this award and initiative.
Amy was described as “A country girl with a strong passion for the transport industry. Very content working with trucks in the rural sector,” by TGR Transport Director, Tom Allen.
Damian Swalling, award finalist, nominated by LRTAQ member Martins Stock Haulage and employee at Swalling Livestock Transport, was named runner-up for the award, and also received a GME GPS Personal Location Beacon.
The award received nine highly competitive nominations, with entrants from all over Australia. The panel of four judges admitted it had been hard to single out a winner.
The award was developed by PowerTorque Magazine, in association with the ALRTA and sponsored by ALRTA National Partner bp.

2023 LRTAV CONFERENCE
New ALRTA Executive Director Rachel Smith attended the 2023 LRTAV Conference in Ballarat VIC last week.
The conference was opened by the Hon Catherine King, Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, and it was great to hear about her commitment to rural transport.
The compliance session was a very interesting and well received session. A great listen on this topic is the podcast by Copy Southbound.
Senator the Hon Bridget McKenzie was a guest speaker at the Saturday night dinner, showing strong support for the industry and working positively with the ALRTA.
A conference highlight for Rachel was the Cattle Sheep Conversion. Luckily no one lost any fingers and congratulations to the winner, Wade. The Women in Rural Transport session was also great fun, learning how to make some interesting cocktails from local Bar owner Louis (hopefully he recovers).
Another highlight was watching the exciting Matildas game and penalty shoot out with members and partners.
A big thank you to LRTAV for hosting such a successful and enjoyable event. ALRTA look forward to attending again next year.
DARRAN BAIRSTOW ELECTED PRESIDENT AT LRTAWA
Darran Bairstow was elected president of LRTAWA on Friday 4 August, at the LRTAWA/ALRTA Combined Conference in Busselton WA.
It was lovely for ALRTA to have the opportunity to meet Darran at the conference and congratulate him in person.
Outgoing president David Fyfe ended his four year leadership of LRTAWA, taking on the Secretary role at ALRTA National Council. David was presented with a gift of appreciation for his industry contributions across his 28 years.
NHVR SAFETY CAMPAIGN CONTINUES
Earlier this year, NHVR launched a new safety campaign with a simple message – we all need space.
The campaign includes videos and downloadable resources on how to overtake trucks safely, keeping out of truck blind spots, and not overtaking turning trucks.
To support this campaign, ALRTA is sharing these resources on our social media accounts, and we encourage our members to do the same.
We all want our loved ones to get home safely every time they go to work. By sharing these simple messages, we hope to see less dangerous behaviour out on the roads.
We all need space to stay safe on the roads.
NHVR TIPPER DESIGN CODE EXTENSION
NHVR released Vehicle Standards Bulletin 6 (VSB6), Version 3.2 on 1 July, which saw the implementation of the J4 tipper body design code.
To provide more time for modifications and allow industry to adjust to the new standards, the initial three-month period has now been extended to 1 February 2024.
