Our History

Four decades of advocacy

Shaping rural transport since 1985

Since we were founded in 1985, we have played a major role in shaping the landscape of rural transport in Australia.

Over the decades, we have evolved from a grassroots organisation into a leading advocate for the industry, representing the interests of hard-working rural transporters nationwide.

Our Milestones

Over the years, ALRTA and our state associations have together advocated on a range of issues that benefit transport operators and the rural supply chain. Here's a snapshot of that journey.

1985

ALTA was founded with the mission to unify and advocate for rural transporters across Australia.

2011

ALTA changed its name to ALRTA — broadening the original livestock focus to include all types of rural transport.

2014

Successfully campaigned for Anti-Lock Braking exemptions.

2016

Partnered with NTI to establish the Livestock Assist 24 Hour Hotline.

2022

Partnered with the NHVR to develop a registered National Effluent Code of Practice.

2024

Secured livestock transporter exemptions from Road Transport Contractual Orders under Closing Loopholes legislation.

2025

Celebrated our 40th anniversary at the National Conference in Canberra, 4–5 April.

Today

We represent the hard-working road transport companies of regional and rural Australia who provide the 'first and last' link of the agricultural supply chain — continuing to champion innovation and safety.

We Celebrated 40 Years

In April 2025, ALRTA marked four decades of advocacy for rural transport with our 40th anniversary celebration at the National Conference in Canberra. It was a special occasion bringing together members, partners and friends from across the country to recognise the people and partnerships that have shaped the industry since 1985.
