Our History

Since we were founded in 1985 we have played a major role in shaping the landscape of rural transport in Australia.

Over the decades, we have evolved from a grassroots organisation into a leading advocate for the industry, representing the interests of hard-working rural transporters nationwide.

Our Milestones

Over the years, the ALRTA and our state associations have together successfully advocated on a range of issues that benefit transport operators and the rural supply chain, here’s just a snapshot of some of those issues:

1985

ALTA was founded with the mission to unify and advocate for rural transporters across Australia.

2011

ALTA changed its name to ALRTA. The name change reflected a broadening of the original livestock focus to include all types of rural transport.

2014

Successfully campaigned for Anti-Lock Braking Exemptions

2016

Partnered with NTI to establish the Livestock Assist 24 Hour Hotline.

2022

Partnered with NHVR to develop a registered National Effluent Code of Practice

2024

Successfully campaigned for Livestock Transporters to be exempt from Road Transport Contractual Orders under Closing Loopholes legislation

Present

Today, we represent all hard-working road transport companies, based in the small communities of regional and rural Australia, who provide the ‘first and last’ link of the supply chain for Australia’s agricultural industries. We continue to grow and adapt, championing innovation and safety within the industry
