We work with industry partners, regulatory bodies, government agencies, and our members to drive projects that improve the overall standards within the rural transport sector. Our efforts are focused on implementing best practices, improving infrastructure, and ensuring compliance with safety and welfare regulations. Through these collaborative projects, we strive to create a safer, more efficient, and humane industry for all stakeholders involved.
Animal Welfare
We are committed to upholding the highest standards of animal welfare within the livestock transport sector. Our projects aim to enhance animal welfare protocols and ensure adherence to relevant regulations, fostering a safe, compassionate and ethical approach in all aspects of livestock transport.
Effluent Code of Practice
The Effluent Code of Practice aims to improve the management of livestock effluent during transport. Proper effluent management is crucial for road safety, animal welfare, and environmental protection.
Livestock Assist
The Livestock Assist project, developed in partnership with NTI, provides vital support and resources for managing animal welfare during transport. This initiative focuses on enhancing safety, compliance, and care for livestock, offering practical solutions and expert guidance to improve industry standards.
Animal Welfare Accreditation
ALRTA is currently reviewing, designing, and relaunching a world-class Animal Welfare Accreditation program for road animal transport in Australia. The new program, developed with NTI, supports consignors, transporters, and consignees in meeting their driver and animal welfare obligations.
Operators with expiring or expired accreditations have their status extended to June 30, 2025. Those concerned about their expiry dates are encouraged to contact ALRTA. ALRTA and NTI are working with supply chain participants, animal welfare groups, regulators, and operators to ensure best practices are integrated into the accreditation process
Health & Safety
Ensuring the safety of our members and their loads is a major industry challenge. Our initiatives focus on reducing accidents and enhancing safety, stringent vehicle safety standards, and advocacy for better infrastructure. These efforts aim to create a safer environment for everyone in the rural transport sector.
Safer Loading : Crate P.A.L Trial Proves Feasibility of User-Pay Model
A successful trial at Kilcoy Global Foods Australia in Southeast Queensland has shown that a user-pay model for installing and operating state-of-the-art safety infrastructure is feasible for high-volume livestock facilities. Costs can typically be recovered within three years. ALRTA recommends that livestock facilities consider this option to fast-track the installation of loading or unloading gantries.
Telematics Project
In this current project, funded by the federal government’s Heavy Vehicle Safety Initiative (HVSI), the ALRTA is conducting two business case studies to promote, and provide guidance in, the use of telematics data from heavy vehicle electronic stability control systems (ESC) to encourage safer driver behaviour in the livestock transport industry and reduce the incidence of truck roll-over crashes.
National Biosecurity Truck Wash Guide
This project is in development to create a National Truck Wash Guide that will provide guidance for the design and construction of truck wash bays and facilities and recommend the features that make truck wash bays safe, reliable, efficient, cost effective and user friendly.
