Background

Loading ramps and forcing yards are the most hazardous areas in livestock handling, posing risks such as crushing, lacerations, and falls. The industry agrees that separating livestock and people, a key principle of the standard, is crucial for improving safety.
The standard, based on the 2015 ALRTA Guide for Safe Design of Livestock Loading Ramps and Forcing Yards, has strong support from the livestock supply chain.
ALRTA urges all ramp owners to assess their current facilities for safety, animal welfare, and productivity, and to upgrade to meet the national ramp standard during this period of investment incentives.
