Ramp Standard
Background
Loading ramps and forcing yards represent some of the most significant hazard zones in livestock handling, with risks including crushing, lacerations, and falls. A core principle of safe design is separating animals and people wherever possible.
Building on the 2015 ALRTA Guide for Safe Design of Livestock Loading Ramps and Forcing Yards, the industry worked with Standards Australia to develop a formal national standard. AS 5340-2020 has strong endorsement across the livestock supply chain.
Meet the Standards
Facility owners are encouraged to evaluate their current loading ramps and forcing yards against AS 5340-2020 and to plan upgrades. Current investment incentive periods can make this an ideal time to bring infrastructure up to standard, improving safety for both people and livestock.
