ALRTA Executive Director Update
Welcome to another weekly ED update, although a short week due to ANZAC day.
After the flurry of Trucking Australia and ATA Council it was great to have my feet back under my desk and focusing on some key issues for industry.
A big congratulations to the winners and finalists of the National Trucking Industry Awards.
At the ATA Council meeting driver competency was a hot topic and how as an industry we can work to drive change in policy to improve the safety of all road users. The ATA will host a forum, date to be advised, bringing key parties to the table and agreeing on actions. I’ve also been talking to key stakeholders about this issue and the impact it has on drivers and other road users. This issue will be tabled for discussion at the National Council meeting in May in Adelaide.
I met with the bp team this week for our quarterly catch up. The partnership arrangement is performing well and above our KPIs. Thank you to the bp team and to our members for making this partnership such a great success!
The team has been busy this week preparing for our new starter, Tara Edgar who commenced on Monday 29 April. Diving straight in with some Stakeholder meetings in Brisbane and Toowoomba. Tara’s details will be distributed to members shortly and her days will be Monday to Thursday.
Looking forward to spending time in Brisbane this week for the Rural Road Safety Research Forum hosted by the Australian Automobile Association (AAA) and a quick trip up the hill to Toowoomba to talk about potential road side Effluent disposal sites. Later in the week I’ll be travelling to Wagga Wagga for the Wagga Gold Cup as a guest of Byrne Trailers and then off to Rockhampton next week for Beef Week.

Free industry-specific accidental counsellor training courses
Healthy Heads in Trucks and Sheds is offering free industry-specific training courses to help keep heads healthy. Accidental Counsellor delivered by Lifeline Australia will be kicking off the first free course on 07/05/2024 in Goulburn NSW and 16/05/2024 in Toowoomba, QLD.
The Healthy Heads Training Project is funded by the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator’s Heavy Vehicle Safety Initiative, supported by the Australian Government.

Bulk Tanker Day keynote speaker announcement
The NBTA has announced Prof. Arnold Dix as the keynote speaker for Bulk Tanker Day on Wednesday, 15 May at Moonee Valley. Arnold Dix recently featured on Australian Story: Man Underground which provided an insight into Arnold “the tunnel guy”, barrister, scientist, truck driver and flower farmer and his role in the amazing rescue from the Silkyara-Bardot tunnel collapse in November 2023 in India. Arnold is now heralded as a hero by many, including the Australian Prime Minister, as the man behind the Indian tunnel rescue that saved 41 people.
Arnold has contributed greatly to improving the safety of the bulk tanker sector, with his early work in the dairy industry leading to a dramatic reduction in truck rollovers, saving lives and laying the foundations for current initiatives including the NTI’s Spilt Milk Program and NBTA’s learning from near misses project. Arnold is the perfect fit for Bulk Tanker Day, the conference theme is “the safest way” and key topics are tunnel access and safety, which aligns with Arnold’s approach and expertise.

Bulk Tanker Day is the annual conference for the bulk tanker industry co-hosted by the NBTA and AFAC. The conference focuses on bringing industry together to improve safety.

More Heavy Vehicle Rest Area projects announced
The Australian Government is enhancing road safety across the nation, with the announcement of five new projects in the Heavy Vehicle Rest Area Program.
The projects are part of a $17 million joint initiative between federal, state and local governments, with the Albanese Government contributing over $14 million.
They are funded through the second tranche of the Heavy Vehicle Rest Area Program (HVRAP), which will provide $140 million of funding over 10 years.
The projects include the construction of new rest areas with dedicated slip and turning lanes, shelters, landscaping, and connecting footpaths, as well as the upgrade of existing ones from light to heavy vehicle classification with all-weather pavement, solar lighting, and amenities.
Projects will be delivered on the Barrier Highway in South Australia, Newell Highway and Sturt Highway in New South Wales, and in Pingelly, Western Australia.
