Lionel Hudson – Icon of the Road
Congratulations Lionel (Charlie) Hudson, our newest Icon of the Road, announced during the Bull Carter’s Ball at the LRTAQ/ALRTA Combined National Conference in Toowoomba QLD.

ALRTA in partnership with PACCAR and Dealer Industry Fund, launched Icons of the Road in September 2023, to recognise, capture and showcase the heritage of our livestock and rural transport industry, before it is lost.
Charlie has carted from the bottom of Queensland to Darwin, all through the Gulf and Channel Country and across to Perth and back. He designed a Cattle Thru loading system in 1981 which is still used today and enables multiple decks to be loaded in a time efficient and safe way. ALRTA Vice President Athol Carter very proudly presented Charlie with his Icon of the Road profile on Friday night.

Graeme Hoare Awarded Life Membership
Serving as the Chair of the ALRTA’s Driver and Animal Welfare Committee, Graeme Hoare’s strong commitment to our industry was acknowledged during proceedings on Friday morning, 22 March 2024, as he was presented with honorary life membership of the Australian Livestock and Rural Transporters Association (ALRTA).
The award was presented by Robert Cavanagh, member of the ALRTA Member Chapter; Rachel Smith, ALRTA Executive Director; and Garth Hamilton MP.
Robert said in his speech outlining Graeme’s contribution to rural transport that “there is so much to admire about Graeme. He is a wonderful bloke whose strength of character has seen him through life challenges.”

Congratulations Luke Cannon
2024 Rural Transport Rising Star Award Winner
Luke Cannon was announced as the winner of the 2024 Rural Transport Rising Star Award as the National Partners Sundowner on Thursday 21 March, during the LRTAQ/ALRTA Conference.
The award was developed by PowerTorque Magazine, in association with the ALRTA and sponsored by ALRTA National Partner bp.
Luke was nominated by LRTAQ member Frasers Livestock Transport. As the winner, Luke was presented with the trophy, and cheque for the prize of $5,000 towards professional development.
Travel to the conference was courtesy of award sponsor and ALRTA National Partner bp; and both finalists also received a GME GPS Personal Location Beacon.
The runner up, Padraig Carey, nominated by LBRCA members T & M Smyth and seconded by PB and RE Dawson will receive a $500 bp gift card.
We would like to thank all award nominees and members who nominated them. This year, all award nominees received a Hino Gift Pack. The Rural Transport Rising Star award is an initiative to celebrate and reward the young people building the rural transport industry of the future.
Congratulations to McIver Award Recipients Ian and Fiona Wild
A very special award for outstanding contributions to our rural livestock industry was presented to Ian and Fiona Wild by ALRTA Executive Director Rachel Smith on Friday morning.
For at least 40 years, Ian and Fiona Wild have owned and operated their livestock transport business, Wild’s Livestock Transport, at Bald Knob on the southern end of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. They are longstanding members and are very committed to being actively involved in our state and national associations, enthusiastically promoting improvements in driver safety and animal welfare.
Congratulations to Ian and Fiona on receiving this very deserved award.
The McIver Award was established in 2015, when celebrating ALRTA operating for 30 years. The award recognises those who have gone ‘above and beyond’ in our industry in recent times. Ian and Fiona are the third recipients of the award.
Thank you to Byrne Trailers
During conference proceedings, Byrne Trailers held an informative session, looking at their stainless steel livestock trailers.
A big thank you to Byrne for joining us at a busy time of year, and also donating an amazing Wagga Wagga Gold Cup experience to the LRTAQ state auction on Friday night
Supporting RACQ LifeFlight
On Thursday night, ALRTA and LRTAQ very proudly held a charity auction to support the vital work RACQ LifeFlight does providing lifesaving aeromedical care. LifeFlight’s core purpose is to save lives and serve the community, and we are very proud to have raised over $5,000 in support of this charity.
Thank you to Repco Commercial for donating 6 Monroe Shocks to be auctioned on the night.
Fan Favourite Truck to be Raffled for Medical Research
On display at the conference this week was Bonnie, the latest vehicle to be raffled by NTI to raise funds for medical research.
Motoring enthusiasts now have the opportunity to get their hands on the wheel of a highly sought-after 1946 Ford Jailbar truck ‘Bonnie’.
NTI’s CEO Tony Clark said he “is extremely proud to announce Bonnie as the seventh truck to be restored and raffled by Australia’s largest transport and logistics insurance experts, NTI, with ticket sales totalling an incredible $2 million for Motor Neurone Disease research over six years.”
